The First Subluxation - When was Yours?

Few people realize that the birth process is now being recognized as one of the foremost causes of vertebral subluxations of the human spine. Even during regular uncomplicated infant deliveries, the spine is subject to extreme pressures from contractions and pushing as well as severe traction to the neck from pulling. New studies are revealing that spinal degeneration and distortions in the young and elderly were probably present as young as infancy and are often due to the birth process itself. These first subluxations, if left uncorrected, can result in irreversible nerve damage.

Nerve interference and irritation from the cervical spine (or neck) trauma at birth are known to cause abnormal function, unusual behavior, and sometimes, in extreme cases, early death. Abraham Towbin, M.D., is a neuropathologist at Harvard Medical School. He is one of many world authorities investigating the relation ship between the birth process and spinal damage.

He found during one of his many studies that nearly one of every three “stillborn” infants examined appeared to have died of cervical injuries during childbirth. Chiropractors are fast becoming primary health care providers to many families because they understand that the spinal column is subject to early trauma through otherwise ordinary incidents in the early life of a child. Not surprisingly, chiropractic care for children of all ages is rapidly gaining in popularity.

We are witnessing a revolution in people’s attitudes toward their health and that of their young. Clinical evidence today supports the belief that common childhood problems such as prolonged colds, colic, constipation, bedwetting, earaches, and crankiness are often the result of nerve irritation at the spinal level. Because chiropractic specializes in the detection of possible nerve damage resulting from vertebral subluxations, these childhood conditions can usually be helped through spinal adjustments. It is common today to witness an entire family going to the chiropractor for a spinal examination.

The vertebral subluxation complex and all of its components and ramifications are not understood even today. But enough evidence and research exist to encourage all people, young and old alike, to request proper spinal care to ensure the healthiest possible future. The spine is the “lifeline of the body” and must be protected at all times. That includes special attention during the birth process and regular examinations and care throughout life. The integrity of the nervous system should never be compromised. The early detection and correction of subluxations are essential in acquiring a better level of health.
