How to deal with the Flu

Are flu shots always a good idea? Some physicians do not think so. For example, Dr. Ronald Peters, MD, MS (Public Health) of Ashland, Oregon says he rarely recommends flu shots. “We rely too much on a technological approach. This perpetuates the notion that we’re victims of disease,” Peters says.  Instead, he recommends patient education.  “People need to educate themselves about their immune systems and learn how to care for themselves if they do get sick. That’s the best immunization.”

Following are self-care tips for preventing or coping with the flu.

1. Be a Bad Host. No flu can take residence in your body unless you welcome it.  In other words, you’re more likely to get the flu if you let your immune system and body become weakened to the point that it cannot cope with the virus.  “We don’t catch diseases; we permit them to become active,” says Dr. Peters.

2. Go with Garlic. According to many natural health practitioners, garlic has proven immune-strengthening, antiviral properties, but only when eaten raw.  Cooking apparently destroys one of the herb’s principal active ingredients — the compound allicin.

3. The Old Standby Echinacea. Echinacea is most effective when taken at the early signs of flu.

4. Help from Elderberry. Elderberry has been traditionally used for the flu in Europe, and Israeli researchers have shown that the active ingredients in elderberries disarm the flu virus and prevent it from replicating in the body.

5. Good OP Vitamin C. Vitamin C is another excellent flu preventive.

6. Sweat It Out.  Many people automatically take aspirin at the first sign of the slightest fever; however, the body mounts a fever for a good reason: to fight invading organisms.

7. Let It Flow. The body produces mucus to flush out viruses and bacteria. Taking over- the-counter antihistamines to dry a stuffy nose can actually prolong the flow.  Try avoiding such mucus-producing foods as dairy products.

8. Maximum Nervous and Immune Systems Function.  The nervous system controls the immune system.   Regular chiropractic maintenance care, therefore, is an excellent way to ensure proper nervous system function for a healthy immune system.
