Chiropractic profession focuses on the correction and restoration of health through natural means.
I find it amazing that many people do not realize just how much time and effort are required to become a doctor of chiropractic (D.C.). It is surprising that some people think the educational level required of a chiropractor is just a little bit above the level required for a massage therapist. This type of thinking is far from the truth.
The reality is that a doctor of chiropractic goes through an educational process as rigorous as the one required for a general medical practitioner (allopathic physician or M.D.). The major difference in the training of a D.C. and a M.D. is the approach each takes to studying the human body.
The medical approach emphasizes management of the body when it is in a crisis state. The medical response then is usually medication or surgery. While the medical profession has made awesome advances in handling a trauma or crisis of the body, this approach is based more on the view of the body as a mechanical organism that has broken down and needs to be repaired through either external mechanical means (surgery) or through chemical (drugs).
The chiropractic profession plays a different role in the health care system, focusing on the correction and restoration of health through natural means. Chiropractors study the nervous system and its link to health. A chiropractor who is consulted by a patient with a health problem looks first to the spine and neurologic involvement to determine the cause. Chiropractors do not rely on drugs or surgery. Instead, they view the body more holistically and believe the body has the capability of healing itself in most cases.
Many times medical doctors, who have no training or little understanding of the chiropractic approach, do not recognize when the symptoms of a patient really need to be taken care of by chiropractic means.
