Hearing the Body's Sirens

When sirens scream, we are startled. What is wrong? Is it a police car, an ambulance, a fire truck? What has happened? The piercing sound signals disaster, danger, violation of the law or some type of hazard to our wellbeing or health. Our response is usually immediate concern.

Pain has a purpose, just like a loud siren. It is a warning signal, like a fire alarm, telling us that something is wrong and needs our attention. Pain is supposed to stimulate and motivate our concern and alertness as does the scream of the siren.

Millions of people experience more than 100 days of pains a year. Such conditions as arthritis, migraines, back and neck problems, sciatica, disc degeneration and disease, nerve disorders and many others disable more people than even heart disease or cancer.

Many of  us  unfortunately  have been  taught  to  silence  our  body’s warning  system  with  myriad painkillers.  This type of approach, however, can and many times does cause problems to get worse because we ignore the pain and its causes. When the problem is left uncorrected, the pain becomes chronic, and is frequently accompanied by depression, insomnia and exhaustion. It is much wiser to find the cause of pain, rather than just treating the symptoms.

The nervous system consists of the brain and the spinal cord plus bundles of nerve fibers that extend out from the cord through openings between vertebrae. This anatomical fact makes the spine the key to a healthy nervous system that is properly functioning.  And a healthy nervous system is the key to good health.

Strains to  the  spine  that  may cause minor displacement of vertebrae  can  pinch  or  irritate  nerves, resulting in pain and subsequent health  problems.  Any drug taken to numb the nerves can be an enemy to normal function. Silencing the body’s warning siren of pain through drugs can keep us from discovering what is wrong and correcting the cause.

Doctors of chiropractic are trained professionals who locate and correct nervous system interference. They “listen” to the body’s warning system to correct spinal misalignments, assisting the body’s natural ability to restore body function for renewed health.
