Back pain has become everyone’s problem. More than 28 million Americans are now suffering severe pain in the back. And, because of the highly complex structure of the spine, most everyone is a candidate for back pain at some time during their life. Two million five hundred thousand back injuries occur in the United States each year. Over 800,000 back injury cases are due to damage while at work, and back strains and sprains cost our national economy over one billion dollars per year. But, back injuries are not limited to industry.

Records show that homemakers, the golfer, the teenager, the weekend gardener, and the farmer are very susceptible to back pain. Many back pain victims are under-exercised and over tensed, and while exercise, though a part of good spinal hygiene, maybe a contributing factor in back pain, it is seldom the primary cause, or “cure,” of pain in the back.

The single most common underlying cause of persistent or recurring back pain is the subluxation of spinal vertebrae. Subluxation is a loss of normal joint function of a vertebra. It may be a structural misalignment, a hypomobile or locked’ vertebral joint, or hypermobile joint from stretched or lax ligaments around the vertebrae. Positional alterations of the segments of the spine cause spinal instability, muscle spasm, disc profusion or disc prolapse, nerve pain such as sciatica, and degenerative arthritis of the spine.

Quite often, adult back pain has its beginning from undetected and uncorrected childhood injuries to the spine. A sudden movement, the physical stress of childbearing, lifting incorrectly, falls, auto accident, excessive fatigue, the physical weight of childbearing, even emotional reactions, may aggravate or trigger pre-existing spinal disorders, or cause new vertebral subluxations and damage to muscles, ligaments, nerves, and discs.

It is a statistical fact that chiropractic care is far superior to other therapies in back pain and injuries, including most disc injuries. Consult your Dr. Miller at Waterford’s “Top” Chiropractor first for the correction of the “cause” of pain and disability.
