"But It's My Lower Back That Hurts"

The localized pain or stiffness may not be the actual source of the problem!

The localized pain or stiffness may not be the actual source of the problem!

Many of our patients are surprised when I avoid the area of their spine that’s hurting. Instead, sometimes I’ll adjust an area that isn’t exhibiting any symptoms at all. That’s because the localized pain or stiffness may not be the actual source of the problem! The technical term for this is a “compensation reaction.”  Let’s say you have a foot, knee or hip problem. There may or may not be any symptoms, but your body compensates.

An upper area of your spine will often shift in the opposite direction.   This brilliant strategy is your body’s attempt to keep your head centered above your body. The reverse is true as well; the real problem may be in the upper neck, producing issues in your lower back.  Assessing the real problem takes extensive training followed by years of experience. If you know someone you think we can help, I hope you will send him or her our way. We promise to find and help correct the underlying cause.
