Blueberries: Top Health Fruit

Researchers know that blueberries top all other foods in their ability to neutralize free radicals. Cancer and clogged arteries are some of the health problems that can result from the damaging effect of free radicals in the body.

Ounce for ounce, in test tube studies at Tufts University last year, blueberries were found to have three times the antioxidant power of spinach or an orange. The color is the secret because blue pigments, called anthocyanins (also found in strawberries and other blue/red fruits) are potent antioxidants.

A study led by James Joseph of the U.S. Department of Agriculture has shown that rats whose diets were supplemented with a few blueberries every day suffered fewer signs of the mental and physical slowing that can come with an aging brain. Diets including substantial amounts of strawberries and spinach were almost as effective in reducing these signs of aging. “The work is preliminary,” Joseph says. “We just know the evidence that they do is growing.”
